What’s Boron Nitride?
Boron nitride
This is a heat and chemically-resistant refractory mixture of boron, nitrogen with the chemical name BN.
Which chemical property is Boron Nitride’s?
This is a deceptive empirical formula for the boron nutride (BN). BN differs from diatomic molecules, such as hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide. Contrary to popular belief, BN has much in common with carbon. The representation of carbon (a single atom) is inaccurate.
Is Boron Nitride (BN) Hard?
Like carbon, BN can take many forms. The most stable structure for BN is hBN Has the same hexagonal shape as graphite. It also has similar softness properties and lubricating characteristics. You can make hBN in graphene sheets, which are able to form nanotubes.
Cubic boron (cBN), however, has electronic properties that are very similar to diamond. While it isn’t difficult to make, it is much more stable chemically as well. It’s also much easier to create. It can be made at higher temperatures than diamond and is therefore more wear-resistant. An amorphous version (aBN), is available, which is the same as amorphous carbon. (see below).
BN is primarily a synthesized material. However, reports have indicated that there may be naturally occurring deposits. The first attempts at making pure BN are back in the early 20th-century. However, commercially available forms of BN have not been manufactured since the 1970s. According to the 1958 Carborundum Company patent (Lewiston New York), the scientist created BN by heating boric acids (H3BO3) with metal salts oxyacids (like phosphate) and ammonia. It is then molded. Then, mix it up and compress it to form.
Today similar techniques are used. They use diboron Trioxide (B2O3) and H3BO3 to start with, while urea or ammonia serve as nitrogen sources. Each synthesis method produces a slightly impure amount of aBN. The hBN is then purified by heating it at a higher temperature than that used for the synthesis. In the same way, synthetic diamonds are prepared using hBN.
Boron Nitride applications
Boron Nitride can be an important industrial chemical used in many modern industries.
Lubricant
Hexagonalboron nitride can be used as a lubricant in paint, cosmetics and pencil lead. Its lubricating capabilities can still play an important role in vacuum systems, even if there is no water or gas in the compound layers.
BN offers significantly higher chemical stability and conductivity than graphite.
Equipment under high-temperature environment
The compound’s exceptional heat resistance means it is well-suited for applications that involve extremely high temperatures. Hexagonalboron nitride can be used to enhance the lubricating qualities of ceramics, rubber and plastics.
For plastics, BN components may provide lower thermal expansion. This component can be integrated in semiconductor substrates or microwave oven windows.
Because of its thermochemical capabilities, Boron nitride makes a great ingredient for reaction vessels or crucibles.
Semiconductor Industry
Boron nitride’s bandgap is 4.5-6.4 eV. This makes it an ideal wide-bandgap material for semiconductors. Due to its thermal and dielectric qualities, it can be used as a substrate for semiconductor development and metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFET).
Grinding and cutting tools
Because of its unique physical properties, cubic boron is used to abrase nickel, iron, or other alloys that do not suit diamond. The cubic boron Nitride form of this polymorph is used to make cutting and grinding tools.
