Liquid magnesium nitrate is an ideal liquid fertilizer for hydroponic systems. It contains at least 86% magnesium oxide and carries a moisture content of five to ten percent.
Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate is used in the printing industry and in the detection of selenium in plasma samples. Magnesium nitrate is also used in the mining industry.
The production of magnesium nitrate hexahydrate involves stirring the nitrate salt with nitric acid. It is then crystallized. This solution can then be filtered to produce a clear hydrate. However, the temperature of the hydrate must not be too high.
Magnesium nitrate liquid fertilizer can be used as a foliar feed or applied to a plant’s roots in irrigation systems. Depending on the type of irrigation system, the application frequency can range from once a week to a few times a day.
A number of manufacturers make magnesium nitrate hexahydrate. Some of these include Herogra Fertilizers, which manufactures the product Magnigra. They have seen a significant increase in sales in recent years.
To manufacture the solution, magnesite is mixed with aqueous nitric acid for up to two hours. After the hour, the mixture is filtered to remove any impurities. If an impurity remains, the magnesite can be dissolved.
The temperature of the solution should be maintained at a minimum of 95 deg C. A pH of 5.4 should be obtained after one hour. Acid addition can cause pH to drop below the recommended level. Also, aluminium oxide and iron oxide can be dissolved if an acid is added too large.
