How to Classify Copper & What it Is Made From
Pure copper has an electrical conductivity second only to silver, making it an important element in many industries and applications. It is used in a wide variety of electrical products, including switches, lights, motors and generators.
#1 Copper
One of the most common types of scrap copper, number 1 copper is clean and uncoated. It comprises bus bars, clippings, commutator segments and wire that is at least 1/16th inch in diameter.
#2 Copper
This grade of copper is comprised of unalloyed wire that is thinner than 16 gauge, and is surrounded by heavy, plastic or double insulation. It is typically used in telecommunications wiring and electronics, such as outlet and extension cords.
#4 Insulated Copper
This type of copper is similar to #2 copper, but is insulated with polyethylene insulation. It is used for telephone and computer wire, as well as a wide variety of other wire and cable.
If you have a large load of copper insulated wire in your recycling bin, it is a good idea to strip the insulation off before it gets recycled. This could save you time and money in the long run.
